La Vida Alcalaina

An account of life in Alcalá de Los Gazules, a small rural town in the Province of Cádiz in the bottom left-hand corner of Spain, as experienced by a middle-aged Englishwoman with romantic yearnings for the days when life was less complicated, people helped their neighbours, and shops closed on Sundays.

  • About me: I worked in the publishing industry in Oxford for 20 years before taking early retirement and abandoning the rat race for a simple life in a small country town in south-west Spain. I have learnt to speak and read Spanish because I want to make the most of being here, and I don't think you are ever too old to learn a new language. I believe ex-pats should respect the culture and traditions of their host country but not to the point of abandoning moral responsibility - for example, if we feel strongly that bullfighting is barbaric, we should not be put off from protesting about it just because it is part of the Spanish culture (a lot of Spaniards oppose it too and appreciate our support). I have started a blog about my adopted home town because it has an immensely rich history and culture and there is very little written about it in English.
