Italy  expat living in Geneva

  • Gender: Female
  • Move: Italy  Switzerland
  • Interest: Books, family & children, travel, food, art & cinema
  • About me: After thirteen hectic, wonderful years of living in London my husband came home one day and announced he’d been offered a job in Switzerland. Geneva was going to be our destination. I agreed enthusiastically, envisioning a future of glittering white mountain peaks, excellent schools, Sunday ski trips and unparalleled medical care for us and the children. Three years down the line I am happy to say that my expectations haven’t been disappointed. However, I have also come to realise that adjusting to life in Geneva as an “accidental trailing spouse” can be a lot more baffling than I’d imagined. This blog recounts my efforts to take the rough with the smooth, and retain sanity along the way. About Me Originally from Italy, I moved to London after graduating from the University of Florence and worked at the BBC for many years. I moved to Geneva in 2008 and during this time I worked as a freelance writer for various publications whilst playing mother hen to my three young children.

  •  Still on Heidi?s Trail in Ballenberg
Hands up who thinks of Heidi when thinking of Switzerland. Trouble is, when you move here and become an expat in Geneva, Zurich or any other modern Swiss city, you lose sight of the country’s most evocative and enchanting cliché. Expat Husband and I are definitely guilty as charged: we make th...

  •  Great Days-Out with the Kids
Spring is the best time to get out of Geneva and explore Switzerland (it’d be even better if it stopped raining, enough is enough now). We’ve still got a lot to go through on our bucket list but here’s some of the places we’ve visited so far and that the children have really ...

  •  In Heidi?s Footsteps
It happens to most expatriates in Switzerland, especially if your expat plans take you to one of the main Swiss cities rather than one of its idyllic alpine villages. You board the plane with visions of Heidi running barefoot on emerald-green mountain pastureland with cow-bells ringing in the backgr...

If you’re looking for new places to discover near Geneva, look no further than the beautiful medieval village of Yvoire on the French shouthern shore of Lake Léman, right on the tip of the peninsula where the “small lake” meets the “large lake”. Yvoire is one of France&...

Have you seen all the gorgeous Easter decorations that are now filling the shelves in Migros and Coop? I’m such a sucker for celebrations and decorations of any kind so, once Christmas is over and all my favourite tree ornaments go back in their box, I always feel a twinge of sadness that I ha...
