Notes from Noumea

On the 6th February 2015, my partner Phil and I jumped on a plane, swapping our hectic London lives for a new adventure on the sub-tropical French island of Nouvelle-Caledonie or New Caledonia, in the South Pacific, about 750 miles east of Australia. Phil has been doing something economic with coastal fisheries and I have triumphed over French bureaucracy to gain a work visa, and have spent the past 6 months pretending to be a University English lecturer, following an escape from life as a tour guide on a a little green train….. This blog will record our adventures in the South Pacific over the coming weeks, months and potentially years as we build our lives, learn French and explore our new home on the other side of the world, now the initial panic/delight/hysteria/boring practicalities of moving has warn off. Mind you, it still feels a bit like a holiday….

  • About me: 18 months ago, Helen abandoned her hectic London life working for a cultural tour operator and moved 10, 287 miles away to Nouméa, New Caledonia - a small French island in the South Pacific. She has triumphed over French bureaucracy to gain a work visa, and has spent the past 6 months pretending to be a University English lecturer, following her escape from life as a tour guide on a a little green train..... She plans to blog about her adventures in the South Pacific and life in Nouméa, largely so her grandma can see her pictures and also so that she does not fill Facebook with vomit-inducing pictures.
