After all the moves and struggling with where to call home, I have finally found that now. Not in Hamburg, although we are happy and plan to stay for the foreseeable future, but in being an Expat, in having many places to call home and, foremost, in my little MischMasch family.

This is what my blog is about: my adventures as a new Expat Mom, a member of my MischMasch family, a fledgling writer, an Austrian in Germany (yes, there are many more differences than one thinks!), an American in England, a MischMasch in all places I like to call home.

Like me, my blog is bilingual (English and Deutsch).

• About me: I come from good MischMasch stock. My parents are US American, with Viennese and Russian roots, and Viennese, Catholic and Jewish, bilingual and part-expat. I grew up in Vienna, the eldest of two, studied in the UK, met and married an Irishman. We moved to Germany and had Baby, a little Irish boy, last autumn. I was always an expat, where ever I lived. Growing-up bilingual and half-American in Austria, "Say something in English!" demands followed all introductions, only to be exchanged by my "I'm Austrian!" defence once in the UK, in a vain attempt to stave off nose wrinkling at my US English. Visits home led to a discovery that now my family could not understand weird words like 'loo roll', 'boot' (trunk) and, to my Mother's dismay, 'bollocks' that I had picked up along the way. Having arrived in Hamburg, I instituted the 'Ösi (a diminutive used here for Austrians) word of the week' after discovering that, while very popular, my Austrian was not always understood.
